November 2014 & June 2016 (Phase 1 & 2)

Project Overview

In 2014 Digital Realty took possession of a former distribution centre in Chessington with the intention of adapting the building to use it as a data centre. The project was carried out across two phases with two data halls being completed in phase 1, 2014/15 and the third data hall being completed in phase 2, 2016. The rooms allocated for the installation of the standby generators were of limited spatial allowance and this posed many obstacles as the equipment had to installed in a strict sequence and as there was no storage space on site during the works the materials and equipment had to be delivered to suit the installation sequence. A crane had to utilised to offload the generators within the tight constraints of the demised construction site.

9 x Cummins C2000 D5A, 400 v diesel generator sets fitted with Cummins QSK 60 engines coupled to Stamford 400 volt alternators. Three generators were installed into each room with generator switch boards located within each generator room. The rooms were acoustically treated to achieve 65dBA with any two sets running. Separate day fuel tanks were also installed, one per generator, within the generator room.

Each generator room has two switchboards which in turn provide back-up power to two LV switchboards. The generators are configured such that one generator feeds each generator board with the third generator acting as a swing set that can feed either generator switchboard to offer further back up should either of the initial standby generators fail, there is also facility to rotate the swing set to ensure equal run time across each of the three generators in each room.
